Summary of Position

Zoic Vancouver is currently seeking an FX Technical Supervisor to Start January 2026.

The FX Technical Supervisor oversees the technical and creative execution of FX elements for a variety of projects including film, episodic, stream-series and commercials. They are responsible for updating and maintaining department workflows and its pipeline in tandem with the Pipeline development team’s support. This role requires the ability to develop tools and workflows independently at times.

The FX Technical Supervisor is an accomplished senior level FX artist responsible for leading a diverse team of FX artists focused on bringing to life our client’s vision by creating various stylized and realistic dynamic elements for multiple projects across the facility.

RESPONSIBILITIES

•    Collaborate with pipeline regarding FX department workflows and tool development while taking a lead role in the architecture of said developments, including the integration of a fully USD based FX pipeline within the department This will require python and USD scripting 
•    Must demonstrate a strong sense of creativity and respect for aesthetics
•    Supervise, train, and mentor a team of up to 14 artists at various levels of experience
•    Responsible for ensuring team members are on pipeline and maintaining visual/technical/creative cohesion in shared shots, sequences etc
•    Work closely with 2D/3D Supervisors & show Leads, under the direction of Creative Director/VFX Supervisors, to realize the client’s creative vision/needs
•    Drawing on creative/technical design skills to add complimentary details/efficiency/flare/flexibility to take assets from good to great
•    In tandem with department manager, distribute/assign work to team according to the production schedule, ensuring that it will be finished on time and with the standard of quality required
•    Asset development (HDA’s) and technical troubleshooting
•    On the box duties as required, including asset design, development, and technical troubleshooting
•    Attend kick off, dailies, administrative, and managerial meetings as required
•    Work with Recruitment to review reels and attend interviews as required
•    Work with HR to support the development of team members

 

Qualifiacations

•    Extensive experience both technically and creatively as an FX supervisor or FX department management role working on live action features and high end episodics for a minimum of 5 yrs
•    Extensive experience within Houdini FX pipeline.
•    Proven experience working within and developing for a USD based pipeline.
•    Proficiency with Houdini in all of the major contexts (SOPs, DOPs/POPs, LOPs) as well as VEX and Python is a requirement
•    Proficiency with Karma a plus, experience with Karma required.
•    Proficiency with pyro, destruction, and liquid simulations.
•    Must demonstrate a strong sense of creative collaboration with both visual and technical teammates.
•    Experience producing high-end dynamics in a fast-paced TV environment is a strong asset.
•    Ability to establish a methodology to achieve desired results within allotted time frame.
•    Excellent communication skills in English; both written and verbal.
•    Strong attention to detail and follow through.
•    Able to receive constructive criticism.
•    Ability to evaluate workload vs. resources and provide accurate delivery estimates across multiple shows.
•    Positive attitude and flexible schedule.

software / scripting

•    Houdini
•    VEX/HScripting/Python/USD 
•    Rendering in Mantra/Karma is a must, exposure to vary is a plus. 
•    Experience with Maya a plus but not required 
•    Experience with unreal a plus but not required Knowledge of Shotgun.
•    Knowledge of Nuke is an asset.

Additional information

  • British Columbia Senior Employees Salary Range: $145K - $165K   (The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position)
  • Candidates MUST be located in British Columbia, Canada. (Some US canddiates will be considered) At the moment this is a work from home position with the option of working within our studio.
  • Zoic does not cover relocation costs.
  • All remote positions require the candidate to have a reliable internet connection via ethernet and work on Pacific Standard Time.
